Gratitude the most important mindset

Why Gratitude is now more important than ever.

Change is hard to negotiate, and we have had a lot of it over the past year. Change can bring stress and anxiety and one powerful way to get through this, is through gratitude.

When we express gratitude our brain releases dopamine and serotonin. We experience gratitude when we shift our focus from what we don’t have to what we do and when we take time to appreciate and be thankful to those who have contributed to the abundance in our lives.

A gratitude practice is like a workout and a healthy eating plan for your mind. You can’t feel envious and grateful at the same time, because if you’re grateful you can resent someone for having something you don’t. When we take time to focus on what we are grateful for, we choose positive emotions over negative, thus taking steps to nurture our mental health and wellbeing.

To trigger gratitude, we need to intentionally shift our focus for what we are grateful for.

Here are some ways we can do this:

1. Pause and reflect

When you find yourself in constant state of worry, or focused on what is not working around you, try and pause for a second and ask yourself the following question?

“What are the three things I am grateful for right now?” As we write the answers, we consciously redirect our attention from the worry.

2. Keep a gratitude journal

One common practice is to keep a daily gratitude journal. Beginning and ending your day with gratitude means you are vibrating at a higher frequency setting you up for a positive productive day and a good night’s sleep. This introduces positive thoughts and feelings into a climate of change which is tipped too much towards the negative.

3. Use the breath to anchor yourself in the present moment

Our minds are always so easily pulled to busyness, so bringing attention to feeling the breath, or something in the body as you bring the shoulders down and guide your attention to gratitude.

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude will find you noticing more positive things in your life, dwelling less on negative or stressful events and feelings of lack and having a greater sense of appreciation for the people and things in your life.
